Claims of a clash between Spanish police and Manchester City fans have been reported

Claims of a clash between Spanish police and Manchester City fans prior to the club's Champions League match against Real Madrid have been reported.

Natalie Pike, a matchday presenter at the English club but in the Spanish capital as a fan, tweeted about a disturbance at a bar.
About an hour before kick-off she tweeted: "Just watched spanish police batter city fans. A big group of about 100 of us outside a bar opposite the stadium and they tore in battons up. No one doing any harm at all. Very scary stuff. So out of order."
She added: "Been going football 20 years never seen anything like it. On my life city fans doing nothing but singing and having fun.
"Women, kids, teenagers, all treated like scum. So out of order. Am so upset.
"The bar was so busy people were standing on the street outside. All innocent and friendly. No warning, no one asking us to move.
"The police just got there batons out and moved people along by smacking them."
City fans had travelled in large numbers for the eagerly-anticipated Group D opener.

Police defend bailing of Cregan(foreign)

Dale Cregan is being questioned over the murders of two police officers
Dale Cregan is being questioned over the murders of two police officers
Greater Manchester's Chief Constable has said it was "absolutely normal" for police to have bailed the man who now faces accusations that he killed two unarmed policewomen.
Constables Fiona Bone, 32, and Nicola Hughes, 23, had been sent to investigate what appeared to be a routine burglary report when they were attacked on Tuesday with a gun and a grenade.
Soon afterwards one of the country's most wanted men, Dale Cregan, 29, gave himself up to police.
It has emerged that Cregan was arrested in June in connection with another murder but was released on bail pending further inquiries.
Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy said in a statement: "It is absolutely normal in the course of complex crime inquiries that when people are arrested there are occasions where there is insufficient evidence available for them to be charged.
"In those circumstances suspects have to be released on bail as there are strict time limits covering how long suspects can be held in custody without charge. That is exactly what happened in this case."
Cregan had been questioned and bailed in connection with the murder of Mark Short, 23, who was shot dead in a Manchester pub in May. Mr Short's father David Short, 46, who had branded his son's killer a coward, was murdered in a gun and grenade attack at his home in August.
After he was released on bail in relation to the killing of Mark Short Cregan went on the run and became Manchester's most wanted man. After the murders of the two police officers at an address in Abbey Gardens, Hattersley, the fugitive gave himself up at nearby Hyde police station.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Sir Peter said it was one of the "darkest days" in the history of the police service.
The outrage prompted renewed calls for the routine arming of police. But Sir Peter said his force believed "passionately" that police should remain unarmed, despite the tragedy

top stories:‘I am not wanted by the Police’ – Davido releases statement

Pop star Davido has released an official statement denying the news of him being wanted by the Nigerian Police Force over the on-going assault case involving him and a taxi driver.
On Saturday, September 16, 2012, Crime Digest of Punch Newspapers reported that the Assistant Inspector General of Police had ordered the arrest of the popular pop singer.
Davido however debunks the news in his statement released to NET a day later after the news broke;
I want to assure all my beloved fans and friends that, I am not wanted by the police and no officer in the Nigerian police gave an order for my arrest. I went to the police some weeks ago to give a statement and cleared my name‘, Davido said in the statement released through his manager Asa Asika.
The 19-year-old insists that he did not beat up the now-popular Taxi man Femi Ajibola who claims he was assaulted by Davido and that even Susan (Davido’s supposed lady-friend who hired the Taxi man’s services) has denied the news too.
I did not beat up any taxi driver and the lady that hired the taxi driver and all those that are involved in this matter have made statements to the police and none of them mentioned my name except the taxi driver who claims that a large sum of money was missing in his taxi. In fact the lady in question stated that she was not beaten by anyone and that nobody assaulted the taxi driver.‘, Davido explains.
He laments that he is being blackmailed but he will not give in to it
This is a case of blackmail, and I have resolved not to succumb to any blackmail for money. And to all those that are involved in this conspiracy to bring me down, I want to remind you that God Almighty himself got me to where I am today in my music career and you will not succeed in your devilish efforts to bring me down‘.
His manager had this to add: ’These are all false. I’m sure you all know we have been in the states shooting videos for the last two weeks‘, Asa Asika says.
Davido returns to Nigeria on Sunday, September 23, 2012.

US Temporarily Closes Embassy In Nigeria

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria issues this emergency security message for U.S. citizens in Nigeria.

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and all associated facilities will close at 11:30 a.m., and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos will close at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 14, 2012. The U.S. Mission to Nigeria takes this action solely as a precautionary measure. Protests against a controversial film may occur in Jos, Kano, and other parts of Nigeria. U.S. citizens may wish to limit their travels beyond their residential compounds during the afternoon of September 14.

The Embassy continues to work closely with Nigerian Police and security agencies, which continue to take proactive security measures to ensure public safety. U.S. Citizens in Nigeria should consider their personal security and to keep personal safety in the forefront of their planning.

This year, extremists have attacked many locations in Nigeria, killing and injuring hundreds of people. They have threatened churches, mosques, media houses, police stations, immigration and customs offices, financial institutions, large hotels, shopping malls and markets, state government offices, communications centers, beer gardens, and nightclubs. Attackers have also burned and destroyed several public and private schools in Borno, and targeted several educational institutions in Kano and churches in Plateau, Bauchi, Kaduna, Niger, and Borno states. Additionally, extremists continue to target westerners for abduction. As such, the situation in the country remains fluid and unpredictable.

All U.S. citizens should use caution and discretion when deciding to attend large functions or visit establishments identified as potential targets, and respond appropriately if they detect suspicious activities. Because of ongoing security concerns within the Federal Capital Territory, U.S. citizens should continue to expect heavy traffic congestion, road blocks, and significant police/security force deployments. All U.S. citizens should remain vigilant, pay attention to their surroundings, limit exposure to large crowds, and keep their cellular telephones in close proximity for use in cases of emergency.

U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Nigeria are strongly advised to enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). U.S. citizens without Internet access may enroll directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. By enrolling, you make it easier for the U.S. Mission in Nigeria to contact you in case of emergency.link

BET ON AND WIN IT'S A DRAW:Sunderland v Liverpool: Premier League 2012/13, Live Coverage, Preview, Formations and Teams

Liverpool and Sunderland will both be keen to register their first win of the new league season when they meet at the Stadium of Light in the evening kick-off.
Where to Watch Live:
Kick-off is set for 5:30 pm BST and ESPN will be carrying live coverage.
Overview:
The Reds must shift their focus to on-field matters following an emotional week, which saw the publication of the Hillsborough panel's report into the 1989 disaster. The Merseyside club are surely going to feel the impact of the event for some time, particularly with legal action likely to be pursued against parties shown responsible for a massive cover-up.
Sunderland have been impressive so far, managing two creditable away draws - a stalemate at Arsenal and a 2-2 against the high-flying Swansea City, while their home match against Reading was postponed due to heavy rain. Meanwhile, Liverpool have taken just one point from three games under new boss Brendan Rodgers. They started with a 0-3 loss at West Bromwich Albion, then held champions Manchester City 2-2 at Anfield before conceding a 0-2 defeat to the Gunners at home.

Lagos To Introduce Chinese In Public Schools

The Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, said on Monday that the state government would introduce Mandarin, or Chinese language, in public schools’ curriculum as from next session.

Oladunjoye said this in a statement signed by the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Lanre Bajulaiye.

The commissioner said this after a meeting with the delegation from the Chinese Confucius Institute, University of Lagos.

She said that learning the language in the state's public schools would be an opportunity for the pupils and students to speak the language and be able to adapt to the Chinese culture.

The Director of the Institute, Prof. Caleb Orimoogunje, said the institution was ready to assist the state with necessary logistics to make the teaching and learning of the language easier.

Orimoogunje added that Prof. Lirong Jiang, a co-director of the institute, would help in the take-off of the programme.

Jiang said the institute, as a representative of the Chinese culture in Nigeria, was set up to satisfy people's need about the country’s culture.

She noted that the language became necessary because China had become the new destination for economic growth and technological development.

``The Institute is prepared to provide Chinese instructors to teach the language and culture in the state's public schools as soon as the Memorandum of Understanding is signed between the state and the institute.

``The knowledge of Chinese language will help students to further their studies in China and carry out research in various fields of human endeavour as China has become a success story in the world economy,`` the News Agency of Nigeria quoted Jiang as saying in the statement.link
