John Mikel Obi is to host a giant party to thank Nigerian Chelsea fans for their support.
The Blues midfielder, one of the highest profile Nigerians playing in
Europe, told The Nation (Lagos) newspaper that he wanted to throw the
party to recognise the support of 3.5m people in the west African state.
“I want to use the opportunity to tell my esteemed fans that I
won’t let them down as their dear team gets set for the new football
season,” he is reported as saying.
“The Chelsea fans database
reveals Nigerians command a great army of eager supporters for the club
and I know that much reason for that is because of my presence in the
club.
“I can’t afford not to acknowledge their overwhelming support especially when the going was tough last season.”
Reports say the party will be held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in
Lagos on Sunday 2nd September, under the banner 'A Night With Mikel'.
Paul Sambo of organisers Pelican Breed, said there were 2m Chelsea fans
in Lagos alone, and that he hoped 60,000 would attend the party.
